Molloy College - GreenLeaders 2009-09-06 ![]() Businesses across Long Island are turning over a new leaf and leading their employees, customers and communities to a greener future. Once a month, we’ll use this space to recognize those organizations as GreenLeaders. In honor of Molloy College’s eco-efforts, GreenStreet LI and our advisory board of nonprofits is recognizing Molloy as the first official GreenLeader on Long Island.
Molloy is driving the environmental movement forward with new programs and partnerships with other organizations. For example, Molloy is working with National Grid and the Village of Rockville Centre on a solar project, illustrating the power of public-private partnerships in developing sustainable energy solutions. For the project, solar energy panels will be installed on the roof of Molloy’s William F. Casey Center. Power that is generated will flow back to the Village. “We look forward to working with Molloy and National Grid on this project,” said Paul Pallas, Superintendent of the Rockville Centre Electric Department. “We are eager to evaluate the data from this installation to determine its feasibility for other applications in the Village.”
“Sustainability is an important issue for everyone,” said Molloy President Drew Bogner, Ph.D. “We could not have undertaken this project without the help of National Grid and the Village. We thank Mayor Mary Bossart and everyone on her team for both their support and their spirit of cooperation.”
In April, Molloy College also launched The Sustainability Institute, led by Executive Director Neal Lewis. “The Sustainability Institute is Long Island’s first venture of this kind,” said Ed Thompson, Molloy’s Vice President of Advancement. “We’ve taken a sustainability and environmental advocacy group and embedded it within an academic institution.”
Later this year, Molloy expects to break ground on the Public Square, a facility that will include a student center, a theatre, an art gallery and a multimedia center. The new building will be LEED-certified and will achieve a 25% increase in energy performance through optimized HVAC, lighting and other energy-related systems.
