In honor of their eco-efforts, GreenStreet LI and our advisory board of nonprofits recognizes Overnight Labels, Inc., of Deer Park, as the Green Leader of the month.Donald Earl, founder of Overnight Labels, Inc., a manufacturer/printer of pressure-sensitive labels, flexible packaging and shrink sleeves, put his company “on the green track” and has since won multiple industry awards in recognition of the company’s ongoing eco-friendly efforts.

Acknowledging that the printing industry historically impacts the state of the environment, in 2006, Overnight Labels, Inc. resolved to implement cleaner, greener programs on premises. Adapting alternative materials and solutions to decrease their carbon footprint became the company’s foremost priority. To reduce press waste, the company developed a Quality Management System implementing the use of more efficient tools. One tool stepped up production time, resulting in reduced stock waste. The other, a Computer Matching System delivered improved color match accuracy, allowing the company to recycle excess inks to produce other colors. These measures improved efficiency and reduced waste by 5.5 percent.

To conserve energy, lighting throughout the plant and offices was replaced with low energy usage fixtures. In turn, the company anticipates a 10 percent reduction in energy consumption. Regarding recycling efforts, plant debris is deposited in an on-site recycling dumpster. And, inside the office, the company utilizes refillable toner and ink cartridges for their printer and fax machines. The number of units used has dropped from 120 new units to 20 refilled units per year.

Further, Overnight Labels, Inc., uses water-based inks, free of Volatile Organic Compounds, and offers customers compostable and recyclable label and packaging options for their products. “It is our intention to continue to implement programs and policies to further reduce our carbon footprint,” notes Donald Earl.
