Purity Products - GreenLeaders 2009-11-15
For Purity Products, which distributes nutritional supplements, healthy products are just the beginning of the company’s commitment to being green.
“Everything we do as a business leaves its mark on the environment,” says President and CEO Jahn Levin, who founded the Plainview-based firm in 1993. “For every type of company, eco-responsibility is no longer a choice—it’s an obligation to future generations.”
At its 30,000-square-foot headquarters and distribution center in Plainview, Purity has made several moves to reduce its carbon footprint. “Each step, no matter how small, adds up to something meaningful,” says Levin.
Some of their accomplishments: “We installed digital thermostats to reduce our energy use; we instituted a ‘Vacant Office, No Light Policy;’ and whenever possible, we use natural sunlight to illuminate workspaces, saving money and energy.”
Other steps include replacing older printers with energy-efficient models, eliminating Styrofoam cups, rewarding employees who carpool, and using less paper.
They have also cracked down on paper consumption.“ By reducing the paper weight of our catalog by a small margin, we’ve reduced our annual paper consumption by 14 percent,” Levin says. “Plus, through better database tracking of our marketing efforts, we’ve reduced wasteful mailings by 36 percent without negatively impacting our sales.” The next steps: Transitioning to an e-catalog and moving from plastic bottles to biodegradable ones.
Choosing partners is also key to being a green company, says Levin. “From the organic farms that supply the fruit and vegetables for our organic drinks, to our fish oil supplier who uses ecologically sound fish harvesting practices, we seek out suppliers that adhere to the same core environmental values that we do.”
