Dvirka and Bartilucci Consulting Engineers - GreenLeaders 2009-11-15
An engineering consulting firm that specializes in environmental and civil engineering projects, Dvirka and Bartilucci Consulting Engineers has been focused on green issues for decades. But the firm’s work—which involves issues such as water quality monitoring, hazardous waste site remediation and numerous other large-scale environmental projects—hadn’t translated into green practices inside their own Woodbury headquarters or five satellite offices.
After conversations with her co-workers about how to run the business more efficiently and in a greener way, Meredith A. Walsh, an Environmental Scientist at D&B, took up the cause with upper-level management, who welcomed her ideas on how to make D&B
a model of eco-smarts.
“It seemed like many of the changes could be really simple and still have a big impact,” says Walsh.
With the support of D&B Vice President Kenneth Pritchard, Walsh and about a dozen co-workers started up a “Green Team” and launched the “D&B Goes Green” initiative in February 2009.
In less than a year’s time, D&B has implemented numerous eco-friendly programs, including recycling office paper, plastics, metals, glass, batteries and electronics; installing high-efficiency florescent lights; purchasing recycled content paper; sending weekly green tips e-mails to employees; composting coffee grounds; and distributing reusable shopping bags for the annual employee picnic.
Just one simple change—switching to 30% post-consumer recycled content paper—will translate into a 3.4-ton annual reduction in the company’s use of virgin paper, which saves trees, water and energy, according to Walsh.
It’s been smart business in every possible way, adds Pritchard: “The integration of eco-friendly policies has fostered productive communication between various levels of management and provides for increased employee pride and awareness. Plus, many of our
eco-friendly policies have resulted in significant cost reductions.”
