An Eeeek-O Friendly Halloween 2010-00-28
Green is the new orange for Halloween. At the risk of spooking your kids, now is the time to start crafting your plans for an“eek-o-friendly” Halloween. It’s good for the environment, it’s easy on the wallet, and it can still be plenty of fun.
GOOD: Skip the plastic décor this year and choose eco-friendly items from nature. Deck out your lawn and porch with real pumpkins, gourds and hay that can be cooked or composted later. Use 100% beeswax candles or LED and/or solar lights for lighting the path for trick-or-treaters.
BETTER: Go big when buying packaged candies in order to generate less waste. Or dare to be different by giving kids fun treats like gel pens, washable tattoos, whistles and stickers. You can buy them in large quantities at party stores to keep both your costs and waste low.
BEST: Save money and spare the planet by making, instead of buying, costumes this year. Comb closets, consignment shops or yard sales for costume treasures. Turn black pants and shirts into a pirate, or spider. And host costume swaps with friends or neighbors. Skip Halloween-themed,plastic treat bags, use pillowcases, or reusable bags.
One Simple Thing Make this year a no or low-mileage Halloween. Plan carpools for kids going to malls and house parties. And accompany little goblins on foot rather than driving door to door.
