A Cozy, Less Costly Winter 2010-00-28
That early hint of autumn in the air means winter’s chill isn’t far behind. But with some preplanning, you can keep the cold outside, and warm the indoors using less energy and dollars. The best part is, you don’t have to spend a bundle to do it.
GOOD: Check filters in your hot air system. If they are black, they are blocking the hot air that should be circulating through, and therefore, not operating efficiently. Replacing filters is cheap and improves airflow.
BETTER: Install energy efficient windows and doors, and apply fresh caulking and weather stripping around all window and door frames. Place clear plastic over drafty windows and affix door sweeps on exterior doors. Wrap hot water pipes to prevent heat loss.
BEST: Before you do anything, get a home energy audit. Sal Ferro of Alure Home Improvements says they are critical for proper weatherization. Alure’s certified contractors assess your home’s efficiency and recommend fixes for optimal indoor temperature control. Conduct regular checkups of your heating system to ensure it’s operating at max efficiency year-round.
One Simple Thing: For less than $100 purchase a programmable thermostat that adjusts the temperature to fit your lifestyle, reducing energy use while everyone’s out, or sleeping.
