Working in
 the Green
2010-00-28

One of the bright spots in today’s job market is that green collar jobs are on the rise.  If you’re out of work or a student headed to college, green collar jobs offer the opportunity to be aligned with a vibrant and growing marketplace that is leading important long-term change. Here’s how to get in.

Start by expanding your knowledge of the jobs that are out there.  It’s far more than ecologists, oceanographers and engineers. There are green collar opportunities for everything from writers, realtors, financial advisors, and land surveyors, to architects, professors, home improvement contractors, and more.  The internet is an ideal place to begin your search.

Examine your skill and experience as compared to postings for green collar
jobs and assess which of them may be transferable, and what new training, experience or credentials you may
need for your transition.

While you’re mapping your job transition, build up some green “cred” by volunteering for a non-profit organization that will help you increase your knowledge, network and credentials with practical hands-on experience.

Long Island is big on networking. Begin attending local expos and summits where eco-employee are likely to be.

The LI non-profits are ideal for green volunteering: Citizen’s Campaign for the Environment, Neighborhood Network, Sustainable Long Island, Renewable Energy Long Island, Vision Long Island.

One Simple Thing:
