Have a Green Thanksgiving 2010-00-28
Between family travel, supermarket trips, cooking, and waste from over-sized meals, the eco-impact from Thanksgiving is huge. This year, show a little gratitude to Mother Earth with greener holiday festivities that will save you money and limit negative impacts on our environment. Good: Set an eco-friendly table with cloth napkins and china that reduce paper and add elegance. If you prefer paper, choose biodegradable items or those made from post-consumer recycled content. They are on shelves in local stores including Greener Country, King Kullen and Wild by Nature.
Better: eA lot of Thanksgiving fare ends up in the trash. Instead of cooking like it’s the last supper, plan a more modest-sized meal, which after doggy bags and next-day feasts will leave fewer leftovers.
Best: Do all you can to limit car travel–yours and your relatives’. If you’re cooking, make a grocery list and check it twice to cut down on multiple supermarket trips, and encourage guests to carpool to your house. You’ll save gas and lower emissions.
One Simple Thing: Lower your thermostat Thanksgiving morning and after oven use, crack the oven door just enough to allow heat to escape, warming the house.
