Eco-resolutions
2010-00-28

If you’re like most of us, and each year your list of new year’s resolutions includes things that never quite get done —losing weight, saving money and eating better—this year, try a new twist on those old promises. Make it about the environment.

Losing Weight:
The pounds will be easier to drop if you lower your car use and increase your foot action. Walk the kids to school, or leave the car home for errands to the drugstore, the bank and the post office. Adding cardio to your normal regimen will increase calorie burn and cut both your CO2 emissions and fuel costs.

Saving Money:
You’ll already be off to a good start on saving by reducing your car travel and you can supplement it with several low-cost fixes. It’s not too late to caulk windows and doors to seal leaks. Install thermostat timers in your home to prevent overheating at night and during the work day. And for an assessment that will show you what energy efficiencies your home may need, have an energy audit done. These small investments will add up to meaningful savings on energy bills.

Eating Healthier:
Fruits and vegetables are an ideal way to add vitamins and minerals that  every diet requires and they can give you a healthy “full” feeling that leaves little room for junk foods. The green twist is to pick produce that is locally grown.  Look for the grown on Long Island signs. Or buy into a community-supported agriculture program for a share of fresh local crops. For low-energy cooking, try using a wok, which only requires one burner. It’s a great way to whip up vegetables and a fun way to spice up leftovers, which will prevent waste.

One Simple Thing:

If you’re braving the crowds to watch the ball drop for New Year’s Eve, leave the
car home and head into the city on the LIRR.
