Extreme Green
2010-00-28

The motto on GreenStreet LI is to do simple things that make a big difference but for some of you, we know little things aren’t enough. If you’re up to the challenge, here are some ideas for taking your green to the extreme.

Snacking Good Shoe Shine
Polish your shoes and get a snack at the same time with edible shoe cream from Po-Zu, which is toxin-free, made from organic cold-pressed coconut oil. It can also be used as lip balm, skin moisturizer, hair conditioner, massage oil and even as an alternative cooking oil. pozuusa.com, $15

Grave Matters
For the journey to the afterlife, there are now a number of eco-options.  For instance, naturally decomposing wicker or bamboo coffins which are less taxing to the environment. They can be found at companies such as ecoffinsusa.com. You can also opt for an eco-friendly burial that skips the toxic chemicals used for embalming. On Long Island, Moloney’s Funeral Home in Lake Ronkonkoma, Fairchild Sons in Manhasset, The Branch Funeral Home in Smithtown, and O’Connell Funeral Home in Southampton all offer green services.

Paper for Your Parts
For your various body parts, noses, eyes, etc., using recycled paper products is a big step toward reducing the number of tree uses for conventional paper products.  Check out real greenies like Green Forest, Seventh Generation and Wallypop, which makes wet wipes.

Pet-Care Green
If you own a dog or cat, you have to deal with waste disposal.  Left outdoors, bacteria from waste can leach into the soil or sewers. As for cat owners, they already know about the harsh chemicals – bentonite and silica – found in kitty litters, and opt instead for eco-friendly litters.
Extreme greenies discard pet waste like they do their own, and flush it.
