A New Clean for the New Year
2010-00-28

The start of a new year is an ideal time to clean house. How we dispose of and store our things can make a difference on everything from our natural resources to our wallets. Here’s how to organize our “stuff” the green way to conserve energy, save money and protect Long Island.

Reduce Energy Bills:
Clutter-free rooms are more than good-looking, they also make good sense. Cluttered rooms can block air ducts and air flow, forcing heating and cooling systems to work harder, which drives up energy costs. Be sure to keep vents and windows unobstructed. When boxes or other items block windows, it keeps sunlight out as well as the natural warmth it can provide in cold winter months.

Green Your Storage:
After you’ve cleaned house, pack up your keepsakes in eco-containers instead of bins made of non-renewable plastics. Crate and Barrel sells sets made from woven water hyacinth and recycled paper chipboard. Or, save money by reusing big holiday gift boxes and computer paper boxes.

Recycle, Repurpose:
Many items that get tossed are energy intensive to produce, transport, and dispose of, so consider donating or selling any unwanted goods in decent condition. Repurposing your old laptop, lamp or bedframe spares the planet the impact of new ones being made, packaged and shipped.

Even woods and scrap metal can be reused.
