For the Next Snow Day
2010-00-28

Snow. So pretty when it falls, so awful to clean up. But the longer it lingers, the more treacherous it gets for you and for the planet. The first step to greening snow removal is to shovel right away to limit hard, icy build up.  With ice comes the arsenal of ice melt products, which can be corrosive and damaging to roads, plants, groundwater and pets. Sand and birdseed are good options for better foot traction but if you need a de-icer, read labels carefully and pick the least toxic one. National Resources Defense Council recommends those with calcium magnesium acetate, potassium acetate, or calcium chloride. If opting for a snow-blower, electric is a much better eco-alternative to gas models. Find them at P.C. Richard & Sons.

Women Motivated
by Green Guilt
Women are greener than men, says a
December study by New York-based Tiller, LLC. In a poll of 1,000 adults, women felt more “green guilt” than men for not living eco-friendly (41% vs. 27%), and pledged to be greener in 2010 by recycling more (52% vs. 33%), carrying reusable bags to the supermarket (51% vs. 30%), and cutting household energy consumption (48% vs. 32%).

One Simple Term:
Eco-assessment
an evaluation of your home or office aimed at cutting energy and water usage.
