Storing leftovers and packing lunches makes good economic sense and reduces waste, but plastic cling-wraps can be a problematic way to do it because they generate harmful emissions in the production process, and like other plastics, they can take hundreds of years to decompose. Instead, store left-overs in eco-friendly containers. You’ll know them by their “resin identification code” (the number inside the triangular recycling symbol). Storage containers made with # 5 PP (polypropylene) are good options because they are recyclable. In cling-wraps, opt for those with #4 LDPE (low density polyethylene) like Saran Cling Plus. Also good: compostable plastics from corn, potatoes or sugar cane.

If you’re still looking for easy ways to go green, try one of the slew of new eco-smart products unveiled at the 2010 Computer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Just about anything that rings, buzzes, or gets text messages can now be powered by the Sun with solar chargers by Solargenix.  NAVTEQ, a leader in digital map data, has a product called Green Streets (hmmm, we like their name) that enables GPS manufacturers to provide drivers with eco-routing, predictive cruise control and other eco-smart driving tips.  And when all things are equal in your electronics, GreenPeace suggests buying Nokia brand for their high standards in eco-manufacturing.

The Great Appliance Swap Out
Replace your home appliance with a qualifying energy-efficient model and get some green back. Thanks to grant dollars from the Department of Energy’s Energy-Efficiency Appliance Rebate Program, New York State is issuing rebates on smart new appliances, and even bigger rebates if you recycle the old unit you’re replacing. (Proof of recycling required.) With recycling, rebates on single appliance purchases range from $75 to $105 and $115 to $225 when buying a bundle of 3 or more. Purchases must be made during President’s week, Feb 12th – 21st and rebates must be submitted by March 15, 2010.  P.C. Richard & Son stores across Long Island carry Energy Star appliances and will be participating in the program.
