Kitchen Makeovers 2010-01-04 With spring just weeks away, it’s not too soon to think about that kitchen remodel. Whether it’s a fresh coat of paint or a full gut and rebuild, you can make some important choices that will lower energy consumption, save you money each month and show the earth a little love. Always, always paint with low or zero-VOC and Green Seal-certified paints, which are healthier for you and the planet. (You can find them at Abboff’s paint stores.) In cabinets, look for Forest Stewardship Council certified-cabinets made of renewable and recycled materials. For more ideas, consult with a green design expert like Alure Home Improvements. If new appliances are in the budget, go with Energy Star; they will lower your household energy use. Fuel Tax Credit Got biodiesel? If so, you may qualify for NYS’s Refundable Clean Heating Fuel tax credit. Homeowners that purchase a combination of 10% biodiesel and 90% conventional heating oil by Jan. 31, 2011 for “residential space heating or hot water production“ can receive a tax credit of $0.10/gallon. Biodiesel is defined as fuels created from both animal fats and vegetable oils. Petro can provide bio-blends on request and tax credit assistance. Visit www.dsireusa.org/incentives (scroll to “New York” section) for details about the tax credits and other efficiency incentives. Pocket additional savings through NY’s Great Appliance Swap-Out—a State incentive that provides rebates for replacing old appliances with energy efficient ones, and tax credits for home and energy improvements. Visit your local P.C. Richard & Son store for information on participation. |
