GreenStreet LI is grown by Newsday and represents the company’s commitment to using its resources to help make Long Island healthier and more sustainable. We are inviting all Long Islander, families, children and businesses to join us taking back the future.
This is a commitment we take serious. This year, Newsday filed a detailed report with the Department of Energy to measure our company’s Carbon Footprint, reflecting a 10% reduction in consumption over the past four years.
Recycle and Reuse
- Newsday has modified its newspaper production process, allowing us to reclaim and reuse nearly 9,000 gallons of ink each year.
- Newsday returns over 200,000 pounds of aluminum press plates to their manufacturer each year, which are then recycled and remade into new plates.
- Each year, Newsday collects and separates over 5,000 tons of newsprint, office paper and cardboard from its facilities, which are then recycled and made into new products.
- Newsday maintains an onsite foam densifier, which compacts Styrofoam for efficient recycling.
- Newsday recycles industrial waste, including: press parts, cleaning solutions, oil, hydraulic fluids, lamps, batteries and electronics.
Environmentally-friendly products and services
- 80% of the products that Newsday uses to clean its facilities are ‘green.’
- Newsday chooses 100% recycled disposable supplies, including: paper towels, tissue and napkins.
Reduced energy and water consumption
- In 2008, Newsday completed a four-year project to upgrade our wastewater treatment plant, now processing 20,000 – 25,000 gallons of water each day.
- Newsday installed automatic flush-o-meters in employee restrooms.
- Newsday upgraded its HVAC system to a digital environment that self adjusts for maximum efficiency.
- Newsday uses motion detectors to control lighting.
Newsday has a vested interest in Long Island’s future, after all we live here, too. And now, thanks to our dedicated corporate partners, we also live with you on GreenStreet LI. Let’s grow a great green future.
